Training and Competence

What is competence?

  • Training

  • Skills

  • Experience 

  • Knowledge 

  • Ability to apply the above to perform a task properly

Developing Competence Assessment Procedures

It is essential to be able to prove that your staff are competent to carry out their work.  The way to evidence competence is to look at the elements involved in completing a task and how they interact:

  • Knowledge

  • Skills 

  • Understanding

  • Tools and materials

  • Procedures to do the task (your methodology)

 

From these points we can develop a procedure and documentation for assessing the competence of your staff.

Service users should ask to see evidence of competence for staff on their site.  This is NOT a record of training!

To demonstrate competence in individuals it is essential to observe them performing tasks and assess based on the criteria above.

The assessor should be competent in the task being assessed.  Where the capability to achieve this does not exist within the organisation - we can help.
